Winning option: majority for referendum In the referendum, a majority has spoken for the station project. 58.8 percent of voters voted for the continuation of "Stuttgart 21" project of the railway station. For the phase-out "Stuttgart 21" 41.2 percent voted.

Background

A referendum will decide on the controversial rail project "Stuttgart 21". As expected, the state parliament of Baden-Wuerttemberg rejected a law which would allow the country to quit the billion-dollar project. As a result, this decision will be on the citizens.

The cabinet of the green-red national government then decided that a referendum will be held on November 27th.

The changes the project opponents to succeed are considered to be low. Under the state constitution, not only a majority of the voters must vote in favor of the referendum to let it pass. In addition, it must be at least one third of eligible voters. That would be around 2.5 million people. Project opponents have already indicated to challenge this quorum, however, for the event that a clear majority would vote for the ending of "Stuttgart 21".
