Background
The faux-pas word ("unword" in German) aims to draw attention to every day usage of the German language and by this to promote language awareness and language sensitivity in the population.
Its main goal is to draw attention to objectively unreasonable or inhumane formulations, in order to encourage critical reflection of the usage of speech.
The action is completely independent of political parties or institutions. The jury consists of four language scientists and a journalist. It is awarded annually by an additional member from the field of public cultural and media establishment.
Last year's winner: "alternativlos"
"The word suggests, in an objectively unreasonable way, that there are no alternatives available from the start of a decision-making process, and therefore there is no need for discussion and argumentation. Claims of this kind were often used in 2010, they threatened to intensify the political apathy among the population."
