Maj. Gen. Michael Linnington approved a recommendation from an investigating officer who presided over a weeklong pre-trial hearing in December and suggested all the charges against Manning be referred to a court-martial, ABC News reported Friday.

Witness testimony was expected to start Saturday, the second day of the military hearing against a soldier accused of handing over US government secrets to internet whistleblower WikiLeaks.

Army Private Bradley Manning, who turned 24 Saturday, appeared at the courtroom on a military base outside Washington as supporters calling for his freedom demonstrated outside the base.

The hearing is to determine if there is enough evidence for Manning to face court martial.
