Winning option:s Arsene Wenger says Thierry Henry has added to his legendary status at Arsenal with his late winner in the FA Cup tie against Leeds United.

The 34-year-old - back on a two-month loan deal from New York Red Bulls after leaving Arsenal for Barcelona in 2007 - scored 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute to give Arsenal a 1-0 victory and a place in the fourth round against Aston Villa.

Predictions

Background

Arsène Wenger has set himself a one-week deadline for deciding whether to ask Thierry Henry, Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer, to return to the club on loan until the beginning of March.

Arsenal will lose Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho next month to the Africa Cup of Nations, with Wenger mindful both of his limited options in attack and the danger of placing an excessive burden on Robin van Persie.

Henry has been on holiday this week but trained with Arsenal earlier in the month and was sufficiently impressive for Wenger to regard it as a realistic option.

The Major League Soccer season does not begin again until March 10 but Henry is due back for pre-season training at the New York Red Bulls on Jan 16.

“Jan 1 is the vital date for us. We have seven days to make decisions on players,” he said.

Henry has joined the north Londoners on a two-month loan deal to provide cover for Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh, who are both due to be on African Cup of Nations duty. The Frenchman is likely to be named on the substitutes’ bench this evening, with Wenger keen for Henry to provide competition on the left-side of his attack.
