London mayor: Boris Johnson wins second term by tight margin

Boris Johnson has won a second term as London mayor, beating Labour rival Ken Livingstone by 3%, after a far closer contest than expected.

Predictions

Background

Boris Johnson was rocked by an opinion poll last night showing he is trailing rival Ken Livingstone in the race to be London mayor.

With just over 100 days to go to the May 3 election, the survey for the Evening Standard put Mr Livingstone ahead by 51 per cent, with Mr Johnson on 49.

Mr Johnson has squandered an eight-point lead in just two months, while former mayor Mr Livingstone surged ahead after pledging to scrap Mr Johnson's public transport fare increases.

Political expert Professor Tony Travers, of the London School of Economics, said: 'This looks like a knife-edge contest. Boris Johnson now needs to fight back.'

The poll shows Mr Johnson remains ahead of his rival on his ability to fight crime and handle the capital's economy. He also has most of his support in the suburbs while Mr Livingstone dominates the inner-city areas.

ComRes survey puts Tory mayoral candidate well ahead of Labour rival days after YouGov poll said two were neck and neck

Earlier this week YouGov released their latest London mayoral poll. While Boris Johnson’s 49%-41% lead on first preferences was widely reported, some of the most striking results were lost in the news vortex of the budget.

Chief among these is the scale of Ken Livingstone’s problem with Labour supporters: 31% say they will not vote for him in the mayoral election.

Just weeks before the election, almost 1 in 3 Labour supporters are refusing to back the party’s candidate for mayor.
