The Mayans seemed like some pretty cool dudes, and unlike the US government (Which FYI runs NASA), they had style (With the whole gold hoarding and sacrifices.... wait a sec the US gov does that too ;) ). So, its up to you decide whether you trust NASA or the dudes who built Pyramids.

It doesn't matter if it is a solar storm, massive tsunami or mysterious planet, just as long as it causes some good ol' fashioned devastation!

Just think about the settlement details if only 99 million died. This very great question would have to have been voided. Be sure you have all the bases covered when these types of questions are written. :)
