Background

Former U.S. Senator John Edwards goes on trial Monday on charges he used illegal campaign contributions to cover up an affair with a mistress who became pregnant during his failed bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

Edwards is accused of accepting more than $900,000 in campaign funds from two wealthy donors, knowing the exposure of his extramarital affair "would destroy his presidential campaign," prosecutors said in a trial brief.

He faces six felony counts, each carrying a sentence of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Edwards admits personal failings but insists he broke no laws.

The trial could last until late May or early June. A conviction would make what qualifies as a campaign contribution less certain for future candidates, said law professor Wright.

People filed into court in order to hear what the jury had said was a verdict in the trial of John Edwards only to have the jurors be ordered to return to the deliberation room in order to continue their deliberations.

The jury of eight men and four women reached a decision in just one of the six felony counts against Edwards. They remain deadlocked on the other six.

After reviewing the campaign's financials for four years, the FEC determined last month that money Edwards' aides collected from wealthy donors Rachel "Bunny" Mellon and Fred Baron were "not campaign contribution[s]," Lora Haggard, Edwards' 2008 chief financial officer, said today.

Edwards' lawyer Abbe Lowell has argued that prosecutors are asking the jury to "invent a new crime" with its interpretation of the law

The way things went in court today it is looking more likely that Edwards will be found innocent. The prosecution will rest their case on Thursday and so far they money trails all look like personal gifts. This creep will get off and rightfully so. Too bad he can't be tried for being a self-centered putz, because he would surely lose that case.

I agree Buckeye...
I cannot understand how the Govt. can prove such a thing.... , but i guess they can prove it to the satisfaction of
people on juries, who wish they had as much money as edwards has, and convince rich widows to bestow $ on him...

Edwards is a slimeball, but since the two donors of the cash cannot testify that the funds were specifically earmarked for his election campaign I see Edwards just simply stating that the monies were a Gift. If the funds can be believed to be gifts then that sits outside of the campaign fund reporting laws and Edwards will win this case.
