Winning option:Still coach at least until the end of the 2012/2013 season This is the question nobody wanted to ask: Is Tito Vilanova fit enough to manage another season after the one that is finishing up this weekend?

The answer sits sadly at the crossroads between human fiber and the cold business aspect of professional soccer.

Background

Despite Barcelona's record-breaking success under Pep Guardiola over the past four years - resulting in 13 trophies and countless magical moments - assistant coach Tito Vilanova has rarely been the center of attention.

Until today that is, when the 42-year-old was somewhat surprisingly confirmed as Barcelona's coach for 2012-13 following the decision by Guardiola to step down at the end of the current season.

FC Barcelona head coach Tito Vilanova has stepped down from his position. Joan Francesc (“Rubi”) Ferrer, will take over as interim coach as the Catalan squad looks for a replacement.

According to Spanish publication La Vanguardia, Vilanova apparently has had a relapse in his battle against throat cancer.

Vilanova, who left Barcelona for a couple of months earlier this year for cancer treatment, has decided that his treatment will not allow him to continue his role as coach of the Spanish giants, Spanish publication AS reported.

MADRID: Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova insisted Friday he would still be in charge of the newly crowned Spanish champions next season despite press rumours to the contrary.

Vilanova missed two months of the current season after heading to New York for cancer treatment.

He was replaced during that time by his assistant Jordi Roura.

But the 44-year-old says reports of his imminent professional demise are grossly exaggerated.
