Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting divorced. This is both shocking and entirely predictable. As celebrity couples go, they don’t come any more intriguing than TomKat (come on, haven’t you wondered what really goes on behind closed doors?) and everyone knows someone who purports to know someone else that knows the real story behind their union.

Holmes filed for divorce in New York on Thursday citing “irreconcilable differences.” According to TMZ, she is seeking primary residential custody and sole custody, which is somewhat unusual in Hollywood divorces. By contrast, in recent splits ex-couples Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony and Courteney Cox and David Arquette agreed to joint custody. If Holmes were to get sole custody of Suri, she would have a greater influence over issues related to how the child would be raised.

Her attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, released a statement to People on Friday which read: “This is a personal matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

Cruise’s publicist offered this: “Katie has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.”

Let the custody war begin.
