Background
Muammar al-Gaddafi gathered enormous wealth in his forty years at the head of Libya . Undiscovered assets of the dictator still may exist: According to the Lebanese newspaper "Al-Diyar" he is said to have buried a treasure in the desert.
The former intelligence chief Senussi, who was extradited from Mauritania to Libya early September, revealed this an interrogation. Senussi reportedly said that only a few former officers and one of Gaddafi's sons knew about the location of the treasure. A special vault was build to store the gold.
Libya's former intelligence chief said, according to the newspaper, Gaddafi had created the gold reserves during the period when the United States, the EU and the United Nations imposed sanctions against Libya during 1992 to 2003. Gaddafi was captured in October 2011 and killed by rebels.
