Winning option:After Mar 2013 The curious little game known as 22cans Curiosity is now on day 149, and we’re back with another edition of Behind the Cube. It’s been around a month since we covered the Cube, and not much has changed although the backer images are still rolling out as each layer is removed.

Background

“Curiosity – What’s Inside The Cube” (to give it its full title — the subtitle was added to avoid confusion with the Mars rover) is part massively multiplayer online game, part social experiment and completely and utterly insane. The free app is available for both iOS and Android devices and when you first start it up you see a gently rotating cube (rather like a Borg ship), floating in a white room. You can spin the cube, pinch to zoom in and out and a tap will take you right into the surface of the cube. As you zoom in, you start to see the individual pixels of the image on the surface. But then it zooms you in further, revealing the pixels that make up the pixels of the image. And then again. When you are zoomed all the way in, each of these pixels becomes a “Cubelet” and the idea of the game is to chip away these cubelets with a tap of your finger.

Yup, that’s it.

Apparently there are 64 billion cubelets in total, making around 2,000 layers, and each layer must be fully removed before the next layer becomes available. At the time of writing, the first layer had just gone – with over 100 million cubelets – and it took about a day to do it. If the last cubelet is really the center of the cube, we could be here a while.

The one person who chips away the very last cubelet wins the as yet unspecified, but supposedly life-changing, grand prize.

A few weeks back we talked about 22cans Curiosity and how names started popping up on the cube. This week we’re going to take a look at the latest happening on the cube, including the inclusion of faces.

We are now up to 218 layers removed on 22cans Curiosity, and at the time of this writing there are roughly 24,434,741 cubelets remaining before we hit layer 219. As mentioned, over the past few weeks names started appearing on the cube, and earlier this week we got our first look at some of the backers faces.

That being said, I have no idea how many faces we’re likely to see so it could be awhile. Either way, 22cans Curiosity has gotten a little more interesting, and now’s a great time to check it out if you’ve taken a break. You can pick up 22cans Curiosity for free on Google Play.

Yes, I think it desperately needs to be done (before another Angry Birds comes out). I have some ideas and code. I'll start putting them together. Want to start a forum topic for input and discussion so we can start moving forward?

isn't someone of us capable to port Knew The News to a mobile app? I can help ;-)

Must need funds for the "unspecified, but supposedly life-changing, grand prize". Seriously, this app seems like a total waste of time. Wouldn't all that time be better spent playing Angry Birds Star Wars? ;)

Peter Molyneux's new studio, 22 Cans, is appealing for help to keep Curiosity: The Cube running in the face of overwhelming interest in the free mobile app.

The studio has implemented a PayPal donation button on its site so that people can contribute to the title's server and ongoing development costs.

'We are a small independent developer and due to popular demand we now offer the option for kind people to donate,' reads a statement on 22 Cans' site. 'However big or small the donation, it will really help us make Curiosity better.'
