Winning option:François Gabart The warmth of the welcome and the passion for the Vendée Globe was immediately obvious to everyone who was in Les Sables d’Olonne to witness the historic finishes of winner François Gabart and second placed Armel Le Cléac’h, and indeed to a huge global audience who used every different type of media to share the incredible experience.

Background

The Vendee Globe is now underway with Dominique Wavre, skipper of Mirabaud, and his fellow competitors racing out into the open ocean this afternoon, alone for the first time in three weeks and having seen over a million visitors in Les Sables d’Olonne.

The start began with the traditional boat parade along the Port Olona channel watched by an estimated 150,000 people according to race organisers. Dominique Wavre was all smiles and in great shape, clearly savouring the moment. As he cast off he described it as ‘very powerful’ and the ‘culmination of a long and busy phase of his life’. His parting words were: 'Take care of the land while we take care of the sea!'

A former champion skipper has dropped out of the solo around-the-world sailing race because of damage to his yacht from a collision with a stray buoy.

Vincent Riou of France is the seventh of 20 skippers to quit the Vendee Globe race. He had been in third place as of Saturday and was considered a favorite. Riou won in 2004-05.
