Winning option:Other The honor goes to Madonna, who pulled in $125 million over the past year, making her the highest-paid musician in the world. The bulk of Madge’s millions came from the tail end of her MDNA Tour, which grossed $305 million. She augments her income with heady merchandise sales at concerts, as well as her Material Girl clothing line and Truth or Dare fragrance.

Gaga ranks second with $80 million; she grossed over $160 million on her latest tour before succumbing to a hip injury. Had she been able to finish, she would have likely topped $200 million. Her ARTPOP album was released after the end of our scoring period, but should give her a boost on next year’s list. She could easily reach the No. 1 spot with a successful set of concerts, the main driver for most major artists’ earnings.

Background

With a whopping $110 million in pretax earnings, Dr. Dre is this year's top-earning musician—thanks largely to his Beats headphone line. He leads a pack of pop stars, rock icons, rap moguls and country crooners, many of whom bank the bulk of their bucks outside the recording studio.

Dr. Dre hasn't released an album in 13 years ... and at this point, he might never put another one out again.

That's because the Good Doctor tops Forbes' new list of "The World's 25 Highest-Paid Musicians," raking in an estimated $110 million from May 2011 to May 2012, when the magazine looked at revenues. Dre's haul dwarfed the likes of Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Kanye West, all of whom made the cut, and was nearly $30 million more than the man who came in at #2 on the list, Roger Waters.

And, as you are probably aware, he made all of that loot without releasing a single note of new music (his last single, "I Need A Doctor," hit in February 2011). And while royalties from his expansive back catalog and payment for performances like his headlining set at the Coachella fest certainly helped fill his coffers, the majority of Dre's wealth these days comes one very profitable source: his range of Beats headphones, earphones and accessories.
