Question Details

Will Jack Lew "loopy"-signature be used on dollar bills?

Settled on 06/19/2013 21:25 Settled by

Lew's signature needed a major make over. After President Obama nominated him to the post in January, Lew's John Hancock was downright indiscernible. Even the President pleaded for him to work on his penmanship.
He got the memo, and by April, a revamped version that clearly spelled out his name appeared on an annual report from the Financial Stability Oversight Council. The official signature released by Treasury takes it one step further: The newest version steps up the fancy factor with more swirls and a drawn-out 'w' at the end of 'Lew.'

Background
Jack Lew's nomination for treasury secretary means a new signature could soon be coming to the dollar bill.
Not that you'll be able to read it.
The secretary’s signature appears below the seal of the Treasury, on the right side of all printed dollar bills once he takes office. Last year, Jack Lew’s signature was revealed to the public while he was Director of the Office of Management and Budget.
Lew's signature starts off promising enough, with a soft "J." But what follows are seven loopy scribbles, rendering his signature illegible.
As someone who is about to become the next Treasury Secretary (and who will have to tackle the nation’s budget challenges during Obama’s second term), Lew may have to practice his penmanship for Federal Reserve notes and all dollar bills.
In an interview with NPR, Timothy Geithner said he had to re-do his illegible signature before it was fit to print on the nation’s currency. Geithner admitted that he had “a completely illegible scrawl that did not seem suitable for the dollar bill. So I had to change it so people could see my name.”
