Predictions
Background
City Councilman Eric Garcetti will face City Controller Wendy Greuel in a May runoff election to choose the next mayor of Los Angeles after neither candidate captured a majority in Tuesday’s municipal elections.
Mr. Garcetti and Ms. Greuel had long been seen as the two front-runners of the race, consistently staying far ahead of the other candidates in public opinion polls. The former City Council colleagues agree on many issues and could struggle to differentiate themselves in the general election.
With all the electoral precincts reporting, Mr. Garcetti had 33 percent of the vote and Ms. Greuel had 29 percent.
The elections will usher in the biggest change in city politics in nearly a decade — in addition to a new mayor, voters were picking a city attorney, controller and 8 of the 15 seats on the City Council. Still, polling places reported low turnout throughout the day.
