A Gwinnett County pizza parlor was shut down after health inspectors reported cockroaches crawling over exposed food.

Enzo’s Pizza on Highway 78 in Snellville was closed a week ago. It scored 53 out of 100 on the May 21 inspection. To reopen, the restaurant must address numerous violations and pass a reinspection.

The owner, Tom Tillotson, told Channel 2’s Carol Sbarge by phone he’s embarrassed and apologizes to the people of Snellville. He said there was a bad manager and employees are now fixing problems.

A sign at the front door says the restaurant is closed for summer cleaning, but the health department shut it down after an inspector found cockroaches throughout the food prep and cooking areas.

“Matters today, regarding pests, were the worst observed in the facility thus far. Roach infestation has been noted on multiple inspections,” the inspection report said.

The report said cockroaches were crawling along a wall behind the pizza ovens, grill and fryer, out of a wall behind the pizza make-line, food was held after its seven-day shelf life and flooring was unclean throughout the restaurant.

Tillotson said a pest control company has been to the restaurant several times in the last week, and Sbarge found a new manager there Wednesday. Tillotson believes Enzo’s will be reinspected Thursday.
