Winning option:No In an astonishing break in the eight-year-old case of the disappearance of youngster Madeleine McCann, police have identified three new suspects. British police reportedly believe that the three men were operating a burglary ring in the area where Madeleine disappeared and when they happened upon the 3-year-old in the hotel room, they panicked and took her with them.

Predictions

Background

The investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is to be taken on by the Metropolitan Police, according to reports.

An announcement is expected in the next few weeks following a two-year Scotland Yard review of the stalled Portuguese inquiry, says the Daily Mail. The Met says her parents are being kept fully updated on its work.

A review into the case by police in the UK discovered new potential leads but the police in Portugal have not reopened the case.

The team has been compiling and reviewing material from three separate strands - the Portuguese investigation, inquiries by the UK law enforcement agencies and the work of private investigators or agencies.

There are believed to be around 40,000 pieces of information equating to about 100,000 pages.

Madeleine was almost four when she went missing on holiday in Praia da Luz in 2007.

Home Secretary Theresa May has agreed to provide funding for a full investigation by UK detectives, according to the Mail.

Police probing the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal have said there was an "overwhelming response" to an appeal on the BBC's Crimewatch programme with more than 300 calls.

Officers suggested the 2007 case bore hallmarks of a "pre-planned abduction". Scotland Yard said it was also looking into possible links to burglaries and bogus charity collections in the area.

Crimewatch editor Joe Mather said several callers gave the same man's name after e-fit pictures were shown. Police outlined their latest findings in the search for Madeleine on BBC One's Crimewatch on Monday.
