Winning option:No The prosecution did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius committed premeditated murder in the Valentine’s Day 2013 killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a South African judge said Thursday morning at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. However, the judge added that it “is clear that his conduct was negligent.”

Judge Thokozile Masipa’s comment seems to be an indication that she is prepared to find Pistorius guilty of a lesser charge, “culpable homicide.” She will resume delivering her verdict on Friday morning.

A South African prosecutor urged a court today to convict paralympian sprinter Oscar Pistorius of murder, claiming the Blade Runner had "dropped the baton" of truth when he testified about the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel, known as the "bull terrier" for his aggressive style, discussed discrepancies in Pistorius' testimony and a shift in Pistorius' defense, claiming the legless athlete initially claimed that he fired at what he thought was an intruder and later said he didn't mean to fire but the gun went off because he was startled.

Oscar Pistorius will undergo psychiatric evaluation after the judge ruled at his murder trial Wednesday that his state of mind when he killed his girlfriend should be assessed by experts, possibly delaying court proceedings for two months.

The ruling was prompted by testimony by a psychiatrist on behalf of the defense that the double-amputee Olympic athlete has generalized anxiety disorder and that this may have influenced his judgment when he fatally shot Reeva Steenkamp through a toilet door in his home on Feb. 14, 2013.

Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee track star accused of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, went on trial here on Monday at a hearing expected to be watched by millions around the globe.

He denied the murder charge, saying in a clear voice that he was not guilty. The start of the proceedings was delayed for 90 minutes for unexplained reasons.

According to testimony in preliminary hearings, Mr. Pistorius fired four shots through a closed bathroom door in the predawn hours of Feb. 14, 2013, at his home in Pretoria. At least three bullets struck Ms. Steenkamp, vaulting Mr. Pistorius into the notorious ranks of celebrity murder defendants.

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has spoken of his sorrow over the fatal shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp exactly a year ago.

In a statement on his website, he said: "The loss of Reeva and the complete trauma of that day, I will carry with me for the rest of my life."

Mr Pistorius is due to go on trial for her murder in Pretoria in March.

He claims he mistook her for an intruder when he shot her through the toilet door on Valentine's Day 2013.

State prosecutors allege the killing was premeditated following a fight between the couple. He could face life imprisonment if found guilty of the charge.
