Background

The Austrian state is hoping to make 121,000 euros (176,000 dollars) by selling two mountain peaks in the Tyrolean Alps, media reported Thursday.

The country's real estate administration agency announced on its website that it is selling the 2,690-metre-high Grosser Kinigat and the 2,600-metre-high Rosskopf on the Italian border. 'They are selling islands in Greece. In Austria, it's mountain peaks,' Josef Ausserlechner, mayor of the Kartitsch village near the mountains, was quoted as saying by Austrian press agency APA. He said his community was interested in buying. But he was only willing to pay several 1,000 euros, calling the area a 'wasteland.'

The real estate administration said in its ad that the higher of the two mountains offers 'one of the most scenic views' in this part of the Alps. But the BIG real estate agency is giving potential buyers until July 8 to make a bid for what it calls “the most stunning views of the Carnic Alps.” Curiously, BIG bought the two mountains from the federal state 10 years ago for the price of 300,000 euros, more than double what it is asking for them now.

The Austrian government has pulled two mountain peaks off the market after public outcry. The peaks — Rosskopf (8500 ft) and Grosse Kinigat (8800 ft) — are located in the easternmost area of the province of Tyrol, where Europe’s highest mountains are located. they will still most likely be sold, but the sales will be restricted to Austrian buyers, rather than just the highest bidders.

An Austrian government agency abruptly pulled two sky-high pieces of real estate — majestic peaks offering stupendous alpine views — off the open market Tuesday after an outpouring of national outrage over the perceived sellout of the nation's heritage.
