Predictions

Background

Winner of 2012 US Presidential Election will raise $1.5 billion

If the 2012 US Presidential Election follows the trend of previous elections, then campaign funding will need to cross the billion dollar threshold. This is good for the two main political parties, but bad for American democracy as a whole.

It would be absurd to suggest you could buy your way into the White House. Winning a US presidential election comes down to a combination of several things money can’t buy: natural charisma, likeability, saying the right words at the right moments, developments in the news working in your favour, and to some extent even political policies. Money only guarantees a seat at the card table; the rest is a gamble. But like a high stakes poker tournament, only the highest of high rollers can play.
