Winning option: 2011 Japan's economy rebounded in the third quarter, growing for the first time since a deadly earthquake in March.

Gross domestic product grew by 1.5% in the three months to the end of September, compared with the previous three months, the Cabinet Office said.

Background

The Japanese economy outperformed economist expectations for the three months ended June 30, shrinking for a third consecutive quarter—but at a much smaller rate than analyst forecasts. The report suggests Japan could be a surprising positive influence on a troubled global economy, at least for the rest of the year.

Growth for the past three months was, as expected, cushioned by a sharp rise in public investment—the first in six quarters—as the government ramped up reconstruction spending for the damaged areas in the northeast.
