Background

The Japanese economy outperformed economist expectations for the three months ended June 30, shrinking for a third consecutive quarter—but at a much smaller rate than analyst forecasts. The report suggests Japan could be a surprising positive influence on a troubled global economy, at least for the rest of the year.
