Background

Resignation from an office is a quite regular part of the political scene and, while the particular reasons are manifold, it often has the advantage that you can declare to take full responsibility for something while actually fleeing the consequences and just enjoying the generous retirement pension.

Italian lawmakers have yet to receive the austerity legislation that parliament must pass before Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi resigns, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mario Baldassarri said.

The amendment containing the proposed measures “was supposed to arrive last Thursday” in parliament, and then “it was supposed to arrive Friday,” Baldassarri, who left the premier’s party last year to join the opposition, said in an interview today in Rome. “Monday, they let us know they would wait for the vote in the Chamber of Deputies,” which took place yesterday.

The Senate Budget Committee suspended a session scheduled this morning to examine the legislation after failing to receive the text. The board reconvened in the afternoon, only to break up again after it had still not received the document. Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti presented the legislation to President Giorgio Napolitano today in Rome, the president said in an e- mailed statement.

Thanks and what if Putin resigns as PM to become President? Don´t know how they did it the last time.

As usual, a lost election or any other regular end of term is not a resignation. A lost election after a lost vote of confidence is no resignation, but of course one could resign after a lost vote of confidence.

@bernardo: you intend resign = step down by oneself in a close interpretation or including loosing votes of confidence or new elections. IIRC and in close interpretation that would have been the last was the unlucky japanese prime minister Naoto Kan.

IMO we suffer from the worst class of politicians in decades - why oh why?

And Harper just lost a vote of confidence - does a election defeat count for Harper, Obama, Berlusconi?
