Quick: How harmful will hurricane Irene be in New York State?
i am from NYC originally, and I feel that the hurricane (being very large) will extend through a high tide, so the ocean water will push up the lower boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn (where i was born) , and could (will) cause extensive flooding, which is why the shut the subway system down... I do not know when this happened before, for a natural event...

I am in MD, (quite distant from the storm path) and the winds are moderate , but there are extensive rains from the rain bands...
I grew up as a kid in Queens, and a hurricane was a fun event! It blew a tree over a golf course fence, so all the kids could play on the golf course for free..., while we were otherwise kept off by a tall fence... It was a humongous tree, so took them weeks to fix the fence...

My understanding is that, because of global warming, and I know a lot of people do not believe in it, generally (and it does not
pertain to each hurricane season, as other factors such as el Nino, play a role), hurricanes are getting stronger.... so i think it more likely will come sooner , rather than later..

La Nina means that there are less winds available to disrupt the cyclonic convection patterns...

To me, these are debts that Congress has already agreed to. So, it is simply a question of paying their bill, as it is now due.
If they do not want to pay the bill, then it would be better not to agree to purchase the items in advance... (the wars,
spending more than the US takes in, etc. etc.)
I cannot understand the outrage against raising the debt ceiling, to pay for the items that are essentially already spent.
Maybe i do not understand it properly, or maybe the politicians are mis-characterizing the situation..

Bernado, this is a case of, in my humble opinion, of insufficient spanning the space of the "logical world" so that all conditions are met..
I had a question YES, NO or OTHER (which meant some grey reason that was not either, yes or no, and i tried to explain to you , but it wasn't good enough...)... So, we just let the question fall by the wayside...

This question , i feel, suffers from the reverse problem; namely it doesn't span the logical space sufficiently. I can envision a situation, such as i think is occuring, where we haven't seen anything beyond what was reported... so an added response of a, b, c, or OTHER would help cater to that. even if people chose not to bet on it it would NOT HURT!!! so i am going to tag this question NOW..

I loved the question, since i lived down there, but feel bad, that it might end up being canned... rather than drag on ad infiinitum..

I think this question illustrates how much the "thinking" of the public is controlled by the press coverage of that nation... I always think
of this, when events happen , like when the US had some plane flying over "international waters" shot at by the Chinese many years ago, and Americans all thought it terrible, and the Chinese all thought the plane had no reason to be there (so of course it should be shot at)..
If most of us were in one or the other country we would be swayed by all the brilliant arguments made on behalf of that motive..

In philosophy or logic (of mathematics), they had to invoke "no self referential statements". Bertrand Russell wrote, to avoid
all the myriad of confusions arising from things like do sets exist including themselves, etc.. and this seems like a very nice logical
way to avoid the problem of people saying, well if this had settled before that, then x, y and z would have happened, etc..

Now: 1) when is the end of month? (which time zone), and
2) it seems to me that it might make a difference, if someone is near 500%, in
what order these questions are settled..., for example, is this settled AFTER the others, or before.. as a person could win or lose some % money and go above 500% as a result , or having just surpassed it, could lose that money, and dip below...etc.. so the order, etc.. makes

The Rebels can "win" by anyone killing Kaddafi or Kaddafi leaving, etc. , but unless all the Rebels die and or quit their rebellious behavior and there
are no new people behaving as Rebels , how can Kaddafi "win?" ...

Hi hfl13 ,

This question i thought should be settled shortly after suspend date...
If we know where he is (e.g IN POWER, In Libya, by a recent broadcast of his), then I think it should settle that he is there.
If not in power, and we don't know where he is, because he has fled, or died, and no one (e.g his sons) wants to let us know he has died, then unknown , dead, etc... (those were my thoughts when making it up)...

I had a LOT of trouble with this; not your fault , mine.. I was confusing suspension time, with closeout time.. Kept buying and selling various options... was so confused.. i think i wasted half my $K buying and selling options.. -- look at all the spikes in the curves of various options.. that's me!

Sorry Hendrik, I like your many questions.... But this one, I personally, am not fond of.. The main reason is that i think it is unanswerable as phrased, unless i were to say (yes, but it may not be provable).. In other words, there will always be some atom or likely particles that will travel (either in the winds ) or on people that will reach the US... But it likely might not be reported as "fallout" although that is what it would be... So, i am not sure such "fallout" will be reported as such, so as not to cause alarm...

Nevertheless, i will bet YES on it... just because i know this is right... When i am right under such conditions, i invariably get it "wrong", although i still think i am right...

When you say as "published", and since the approval and disapproval do not add up to 100%, i am taking this to mean
the quoted approval rating alone.... (one could take weighted means of approval and disapproval and force them to add to 100%, which is what i would do, if i worked for gallup, or do some other averaging...)...

Japan Earthquake: WORST CASE - will a reactor meltdown happen?
To me, this is typical of the type of questions, that make a real settlement invalid.... Not wanting to be critical, since I am not doing the work, it is true. Nevertheless, allow me
to state a position to people, (and I know kruijs works especially hard on this site, so pardon me please), that a question IMHO, would be best if it were to state when it would be deemed valid, and invalid (true or false say)... In other words , does it need a "complete meltdown" for it to be a meltdown, a meltdown sufficient to break the containment building (which has NOT happened) or what? It is true there were gas releases, but these were released by the staff to cool the reactor to prevent further material from melting . THe melting , as far as I know has been minimal.. So, does one need to have more meltdown than say 1%, or what? the question does not address what a meltdown consists of ... Does it need a stated report by a reputable Japanese newspaper or american paper that a "meltdown" has occurred? I do not know... the ? does not address these issues.. , i think , except for the generic settlement statement... A plea, IMHO... and sorry for the rant kruijs..., but am oscillating and because i feel badly about betting on this terrible tragedy... (overcome with self-loathing..)
